Good post, I think that for beginners keyword research can be difficult and take some time to learn.

"Do not initially waste your time building a website and getting links. What you really want to do is figure out (and figure out quickly) which searchers are going to want that product. To explain it differently, you want to uncover the exact keywords that are typed in by the buyers."

This is a very informative post. You really did well by discussing concisely the use of keywords, given that it is a very important factor in SEO. I am looking forward to your future SEO tips.

Good point on the converting keywords. This really is where a lot of people lose the trail, not just newbies, either. Putting your effort where it will get the most reward is so important.

Same as Cathy J, I believe that high conversion ratings will beat any high number of traffic with low conversion ratings. Long tail keywords are a must for all web owners! Thanks for the heads up.

I agree long tail keywords rule! I've had a lot of fun looking at the organic traffic my posts attract. I laugh until I cry sometimes, and I wonder what people are thinking when they type certain things into their search engines. Once I had a vey nice post about Santa Maria Style BBQ, which is a nicely seasoned tri-tip. When I looked at my google analytics I could see that someone had typed "you don't talk to santa like that." - whatever that means! But I did have all those words in close proximity, and voila! I became the leading authority for that long tail keyword phrase!!! Now if only I could pull that off for "new ipod shuffle free shipping" I'd be set for life!!! LOL!!!

Thanks for stressing the difference between a research keyword and a high conversion keyword. Long tail keywords do more closely target what the "shopper" is looking for. I am not familiar with Wordtracker, and I'll check it out! Thanks!

thanks, this is very helpful, if i could add to the discussion and suggest after you distill a theme or topic, you get over to ny themes to select an appropriate theme for your keywords.

the lack of Keyword research is what caused my first two lead generation campaigns to fail miserably. You are right not to approch that aspect blindly.

i had to learn the hard way. and by the way, great post.
