How Critical is it to Choose a Niche That You Have Experience in?
This relates to your affinity to the market. Do you need to have experience in it? Do you need to be part of the market?
First of all, you need to identify exactly who your market is. If you’re targeting law school grads, then that’s your market. If you’re targeting trap shooters, then there you go. Now, are you a member of the market? Are you a graduate of law school? Do you know how to trap shoot?
If so, then you fit right into the market. This isn’t absolutely necessary, but affinity to the market can help you shortcut your way to success.
Many folks in the stock trading market were stockbrokers or have traded for years. This helps set them apart as experts.
If you don’t have any affinity at all to the market, you can buy it in the form of ghostwriters, consultants who might help you, and experts that you can interview.
You may also partner with someone who has affinity. If you want to get in the ‘marketing for realtors niche’, but you’re not a realtor, you may need to partner with someone who is one. This may not always be necessary, but it adds credibility. It can also beef up your product or service considerably.
In the realtor example, you might be able to interview a realtor in exchange for advertising space. You might not even have to offer them anything at all. Some people like to be interviewed and won’t need anything in exchange.
Affinity is important. You don’t necessarily need to be associated with the niche, but you may buy, barter, etc… you’re way to affinity.

In our opinion, choosing a niche you have experience in is the 99% factor that will allow you to be successful. In other words, if you have little experience what do you have to offer others? Sounds kind of curt, but it’s true. For example, who wants to follow the SEO site of someone with little to no experience? Experience leads to success - and this blog is a great example of that.
When you say experience, do you mean experience as in “I do this for a living” or experience as in “I’ve been exposed to this before and I think I know what I’m doing”? TBH, people say in order to find out if something works for you, try new things, if it don’t work for you thats your problem and either you need to research more or stay away from that particular niche. What you think?
In most niches you need to be an expert if you write the content yourself. If you have a static website you might get away with ghostwriters but for blogs, forums you will need to be some kind of an expert to be successful.
@GMblRs - Don’t think you necessarily have to be an expert at that subject, but I do think you should know somewhat of what you are talking about.
Depends on what you mean by experience. Number of years on the job or do something many times. I think you need experience and knowledge to be successful.
But isn’t the difference between a professional marketer and an inexperienced one is his/her ability to adapt to different industries or market different products?

Yes, I agree that the difference between a professional and an inexpericened one is their ability to adapt. However things can be learned and thus one might fail at the starting.
