Building a Quick Keyword List with Wordtracker

Submitted by Lisa on Monday, 15 September 20083 Comments

If you’re going to use Wordtracker to generate a keyword list, then you should start with their Keyword Universe Tool. I’ve put together a short tutorial for how I use Wordtracker to quickly build a keyword list here…

First, set-up a new project for your niche. Then click on ‘Keyword Universe’ from within the Wordtracker member’s panel. Type your top keyword into the Related Keywords tool. For example, if you’re trying to promote something in the dog training niche you just type in “dog training”. If you’re trying to promote something in the horse racing niche you just type in “horse racing”.

Wordtracker then goes and finds a ton of related words for you and lists them all. Some will be better suited for your niche than others.

Once you have your list of words, you just click on the ones that relate to your niche. They pop up over on the right-hand side of the screen and you click the ones you want in your basket (which will be saved in your project). See the image below…

Go through the list on the left that Wordtracker generated for you. One-by-one, click on each word that relates to your niche. Then click to add the words to your basket on the right. You can either go through and click on them individually or just use the one-click feature. If you use the one-click feature (the link shown in Step 2 above), then you may get words that don’t quite relate in your list. However you will save a lot of time. I usually just use the one-click feature and then remove the unrelated words later on if there are any.

For most niches, you will be able to find a thousand or more related keywords for your niche with this simple method.

Once I’ve gone through the entire list on the left and added the relevant words to my basket, I proceed to step 3.

On this page, you’ll get a long list of all the keywords you added to your basket along with the search count. The words are organized from highest search count to lowest so you know which keywords and phrases are most popular.

I like to export my keyword list so I can save it to my computer. I select the tab delimited version with both the words and the counts so I know how many searches per day each word gets (it will ask you this when you click on ‘export’). There are more features included in a Wordtracker membership, but the Keyword Universe tool is very valuable. I use this particular Wordtracker tool often and think it provides me with excellent starting point for planning out a site.

If you don’t already have a Wordtracker account, you may want to try out their 7-day trial offer. Click here for the Wordtracker 7-day trial offer.

Where would you use these keywords? In some kind of PPC advertising campaign?

JR … those are all good tools as well. If what you’re using is working for you then there’s no reason to switch.

JBO … you can definitely use a list like this in PPC campaigns and SEO. In SEO especially as you know exactly what searches are typing into the search engines. Therefore you know exactly what anchor text to use when you’re building links and for optimizing your pages. I’ll talk more about this in future posts.
