Using Internal Linking to Build Backlinks - Prequel

Submitted by R.J. Breakaway Adams on Wednesday, 14 May 200814 Comments

Going all George Lucas style on you guys, I am writing what should have been the prequel to this whole entire internal link building series, now that I already have 5 posts about it written…

This only applies to internal link building with a blog, though you can build internal links on any type of site.

One issue with building internal links is that you get a pingback on your site from your own comment. You don’t want these cluttering up your comments, especially if you do internal link building as much as me. But, if you mark them as spam, then you’ll be marked as spam on Akismet, and have to go through the process of being removed (not hard, just a pain having to waste time doing it.)

Here’s the solution… if you plan to do internal link building on your blog, then you need to download No Self Pings Wordpress Plugin and install it on your blog… it’s that simple… you won’t get any more self ping backs!

Now get back to your internal link building!

Nice tip, but I have to ask. Is a self ping necessarily bad? If you have do follow setup in your comments and all how does it hurt you? It looks a little silly if it’s overdone, but I’m not sure how it hurts.

  • Breakaway said:

I wouldn’t say hurts, but it looks ugly, when you have a popular article that you link to internally often, and it clogs up all of your comments….

Some time ago I had the same “problem”, but then someone brought the No Self Pings Wordpress plugin to my attention and that was just what I needed!

Anyway, this is a very good tip and I think that everyone should use it! :D

Well what about self ping sculpting? Yup I totally just invented that. Meaning basically you might have a document pinged from six resources, but you keep one or possibly two of the most important.

Indeed an awesome tip. I was in heaven when I found it a while back. on a former blog, I have a couple posts that I would reference OFTEN…man was that getting annoying.

And yes, it starts to look REALLY BAD after a while…I had more then one reader even ask me if I was being slick somehow after seeing all the \”funny lookin\’\” ping-backs lol.

Comment moderation helps. The pingbacks hit moderation first and you can delete them. Annoying though.

Great plugin, thanks for sharing this. Yeah, building internal links helps getting a pingback on your site from your own comment.

Great plugin. It will be very helpful to me and others who are moderating comments. I heard somewhere about this plugin but not 100% sure about it. Even someone recommend me but then also I thought it is totally useless.

Excellent breakaway. Always enjoy your post and learn new thing as I am too busy with
my client I didn’t get time to search for anything new and best.
    Thanks
