Using Internal Linking to Build Backlinks – Part 1
This is a series about how to use internal links as a quick, easy and effective way to build links back to your site and the various pages within your site.
Part 1 – Increasing your Search Engine Rankings with Internal Link Building
When most people think of link building, they think of one way link building by submitting to directories, publishing articles or press releases, commenting on blogs, or the various other ways of building links. They also may think of reciprocal links which is trading links with another website.
Another type of link building is internal link building. If you don’t know what this is, the best way for me to describe it is by showing you an example. In the previous paragraph, you may notice that “one way link building” is a link back to the main page of this website. Since that is a keyword that I am targeting, this post on my site will link back to the front page with “one way link building” as the anchor text. This is an easy, effective way to build links.
All you need to do is find keywords that you are targeting for your main site, and link back to your main site within a post, by using that keyphrase as the anchor text for your link. Don’t go overboard, but one link per page is effective.
You also don’t want to JUST target your front page. Although it is good to get many links to your front page, it is also good to get backlinks to the deeper pages in your site (called “deep linking”). This is effective for two reasons. It allows you to target other keywords than just those you are targeting with your main page. And, since you are creating a link to that page, Google (and other search engines) see that and it helps to increase your rankings. Also, Google sees this as a sign of a well-organized website. If your website is built in a way that people (and their spider) can easily find web pages, then that is a better site than one who makes it harder to find the deeper pages of a site.
So, go through your old posts and old pages of your site, and see where you can link back to some of your more popular posts, and your front page, and you’ll begin to see a little bit of increase in your search rankings for your site(and especially for some of your deep pages).

I usually put about 4-8 internal links per post. It is mostly to drive readers to my older posts. When internally linking, I am not super strict on my main keywords, I just link when it makes sense. Such as I am talking about leasing to tenants and reference having to evict them if they don’t pay, I will link to my post about evictions. Even though my keywords are Minnesota Investment Property.
Any concerns with 4-8 internal links per post?
In my most popular blog if there is a keyword that works well with other posts, I put a link. If there is not, no worries, I have a section at the bottom of each post I have a related information section that I put two links to other posts. Since I have done this I watched my SERPS go from number 5 or 6 to number 1! Worked great for me. And now that I am at number 1 I am getting self reinforcing links! Its great!
Only sometimes do I actually link to other posts but from now on I will, I didn’t know it could help your ranking if you did internal links.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
One additional benefit of deep linking: If you deep link in the first part of a post and someone “scrapes” the post they get the deep link on their site back to yours.
It does help with Google SEO.

No… the only concern would be the less “link juice” each link gets. The more links you have on a page, the less each one is worth. Other than that, no worries here.
Yah, dang scrapers…. but, they can be of use, because that’s another backlink out there linking to your site with your chosen anchor text!
I use internal linking and it seems to help alot – link popularity is growing and i get pr from other pr pages if there is some.
This is a great SEO tactic, one that I wished I had learned early in my SEO’ing.
It’s often hard to find directories that will do deeplinks without charging a fortune, so this method gets you some good deep links without the cost. Thanks..

One other tidbit of information is always use the keyword in the link. Often times, I come across many web pages who write the keyword, then put a “click here” with a link instead of the key word.

Great article and great site. The information is incredibly helpful. Thanks :^)
I like to put 1 or 2 internal links in each post. The reason i do this is so that if the post gets scraped by a black hatter, I will get a free backlink from them.
